"Ernie Schaaf, 208, Boston, the new sensation of the heavyweight ranks, with eight-straight KOs to his credit, was no killer tonight in his 10-round battle with Tuffy Griffiths, 187, Sioux City, Iowa, opening the indoor boxing season in Chicago Stadium. Schaaf, instead of continuing his string of KOs, was lucky to win a close decision, which was greeted with howls of disapproval from the crowd of 14,800. Griffiths, outweighed by 21 pounds, outmatched in height and reach, fought a surprisingly courageous battle, at times outmaneuvering, outslugging and outboxing the Bostonian. The left hook of Schaaf's never found the elusive chin of Griffiths' tonight as the Sioux City youngster never stood still long enough for Schaaf's famous wallop. The verdict of the two judges and referee were unanimous." -Associated Press

• Despite Schaaf being unable to connect solidly on Griffiths, all reports stated that it was a good fight and Stadium matchmaker Nate Lewis was rematching them the following month in October. However, the rematch did not take place as Griffiths came down with appendicitis and was out of the ring until May of '32.
