Carmen Basilio 157 lbs lost to Gene Fullmer 159 lbs by TKO in round 12 of 15

  • National Boxing Association World Middleweight Title

"When the referee intervened Basilio screamed, 'What do you mean? What are you talking about?' Then cocking his fist, he said to the referee, 'I'll give you one.' Two policeman entered the ring and led Basilio to his corner still protesting." New York Times

"Gene Fullmer of West Jordan, Utah, butchered Carmen Basilio in 12 rounds at Derks Field in Salt Lake City last night. Gene outpunched and outboxed Basilio all the way last night and in the opinion of ringside experts, turned in the most impressive performance of his career. Referee Pete Giacoma stopped the battle at 2:54 of the 12th round because the ex-champ appeared to be battered into helplessness in the late rounds. In round eight, Fullmer hit Carmen on the chin with an explosive left hook that sent Basilio, of New York, backwards into the canvas. Basilio did a complete somersault and came to his feet without a knockdown being counted against him. Carmen's right cheek was badly swollen at the end of the brawl. Fullmer, however, had a flock of wounds. His upper lip, bridge of his nose, chin and left brow were cut up by Basilio." -Ogden Standard-Examiner

Post-fight comments

  • "He didn't know what he was doing. I would have liked to have taken a punch at him at the end. He deserved a smash. But I'd be suspended for life." -Carmen Basilio, on referee Pete Giacoma's decision to stop the fight.
  • "I've got something to settle with Sugar Ray Robinson. He's the only man who ever knocked me out. I want to return the favor." -Gene Fullmer, regarding his next title defense.
  • "You don't win in Utah unless you win by a knockout. This Utah commission belongs to Marv Jensen (Fullmer's manager)." -Carmen Basilio
