Young Montreal was a long time contender as a flyweight and bantamweight, but never received a world title shot in either weight class. He won the American national Flyweight Title on April 10, 1919, but relinquished it soon after to campaign as a bantamweight. He won the New England Bantamweight title and defeated a number of leading fighters in that class including bantamweight world champions Bud Taylor, Bushy Graham, Memphis Pal Moore, Pete Herman and Joe Lynch but fighting out of Providence, RI he never had the political pull to demand a world title fight. Ranked by Ring Magazine as the #2 Bantamweight in the world for part of 1929. Authorities found "large quantities" of liquor in his home. (This was during Prohibition.) The Friday before, arson was committed at his Crown Hotel pool room. Authorities had found gasoline and TNT there. Montreal started fighting sometime in 1915 so this record should still be considered incomplete.
