At the age of 16, Joe was forced by his father to sign up for the Merchant Marines and he ended up in the United States. He would ultimately acquire U.S. citizenship on February 14, 1946.
Settling in Astoria, Queens, LaFauci became a carpenter as well as a sucessful professional fighter. He was noticed by Ring Magazine which named Joe LaFauci a 'promising lad' and a 'flashy New York lightweight' in their December 1931 issue. LaFauci would go on to win the New York National Guard lightweight title in 1932, having joined the Guard in December 1929. On January 30, 1982 at the age of 72, Joe LaFauci passed away at his home In the Hamptons, New York. He was survived by his wife Concetta, 2 daughters, Camille and Grace, and son Joe LaFauci Jr, as well as 7 grandchildren.
