John (Jack) F. Itzel Jr. attended Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Itzel played fullback at both Georgetown University and the University of Pittsburgh and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 17th round, 165th overall, of the 1945 NFL Draft. He played only one season with the steelers and tallied 11 yards on 10 carries. In 1946, Itzell played for the minor league football Scranton Miners and the following year he signed with the Indianapolis Colts, but did not see game action. [1] [2]

Itzell boxed as an amateur and was reported in March of 1945 to be the junior heavyweight title holder in Pittsburgh. He became a professional in 1947. [3]
