Of French descent, Floyd was born in Grand Chenier, La, and later moved to Lake Charles, La. He graduated from Lake Charles high school where he was an outstanding student and athlete. Floyd served four years as a member of the National Guard and it was while with them that he first became interested in boxing. He had a brilliant career as an amateur engaging in 105 bouts over a three year period. He won all but eight, and scored 81 kayoes. East won a number of titles in the Bayou state.
