Johnny Smallwood began boxing at the age of 9. Always showing a keen interest, when he joined the Navy in 1945, he began boxing for them. When he registered professional in 1947, he was categorised in the 'lightweight division' and ejoyed a 2 year career in the profession, completing a number of successions around the country. He then went on to train at the St. Pancras ABC, along with his brother in law Harry Harris, also now deceased.
