- In an Associated Press article of December 26, 1928, reporting his death after a lingering illness, it was mentioned that Gardner had had 547 ring battles. He died in Minneapolis. He left a widow and two children in Portland, Oregon. Eddie Gardner was Oscar's brother.
- According to Horace Libby, matchmaker for the famous Twin City Athletic Club in the 1880's, Oscar Gardner's real record is 472 wins, 42 losses, and 23 Draws for a total of 537 matches.
