Tommy Young, 202-12 as an amateur boxer was a five-time Fort Worth Golden Gloves champion, a 1974 Star-telegram Texas State Golden Gloves champion and a National Golden Gloves runner-up. He fought on the famed Texas Stars -- a team of Texas standout amateur boxers, who boxed throughout the USA in bi-state and international competition. The Stars also boxed against other amateurs on the undercards of professional bouts, including world championship matches.

Young also won Southwestern and Southern Diamond Belt tournaments and "Tournament of Champions" challenges.
