Walter Byars was a clever, fast-moving boxer. He didn't start boxing until he went into the U.S. Marines. He won the All-Marines Featherweight Title in 1953, and the All-Marines Lightweight Title in 1954.
He turned pro in 1954 and campaigned until 1959. Several of his losses were by controversial decision.
He was a world ranked welterweight from May 1957 until February 1958, with his highest ranking at #9.
