According to the August 16, 1933 Spokane Chronicle, Edwards had been charged with third degree assault for assaulting his wife, and Florence Baker, a landlady at Spokane's Bell Hotel. After being served a warrant for his arrest, Edwards jumped from a hotel window, escaping from police custody, amidst police gunfire. Before being arrested at the Commercial Hotel by two detectives.
