Bezenah in erroneously attributed with causing two deaths in the ring. He knocked out Tom James in a 4-round exhibition sparring in 1890, who died without regaining consciousness. Another death, of Tom Mucahey in a Cincinnati, Ohio ring in 1896, wasn't his doing, as Bezenah died several years prior, and most probably involved Eugene Bezenah instead.

On March 23, 1891, Bezenah was mortally shot by Arthur Chambers, alias "Kid Dugan", in Cincinnati, O. A colored woman named May Riley cast Chambers off several weeks prior, and one morning Chambers broke into her room and saw Bezenah and several other people there. He drew a pistol and twice shot Bezenah in the abdomen, and twice more at May Riley, grazing her head with one shot and injuring her arm with the other. Bezenah was taken to hospital, but died a month later from inflicted injuries.
