- Began boxing as a youngster at a ring in his neighborhood near Columbia Heights.
- Was a legendary figure in the neglected public housing developments and grimy apartment complexes of Southeast Washington, where he had lived since the 1960s. He who worked for more than 30 years to keep youngsters off the mean streets of Anacostia and involved in sports.
- Woodland continued fighting professionally until the 1970s, using some of his winnings to start his neighborhood sports programs.
- He was a mentor to hundreds of children and teenagers, who played on his football teams, boxed in his makeshift rings and competed in his annual junior Olympics. His athletes were honored in parades along Alabama Avenue, cheered on by hundreds of spectators. There were annual awards banquets for team members, cheerleaders and their supporters, with new team jackets all around.
- Some of Mr. Woodland's young athletes made it to college and into professions or professional football. Among them was Wayne Martin of the Cincinnati Bengals.
- Died at the Potomac Rehabilitation Center in Arlington after suffering a stroke.
