Johnson was badly managed and was only matched with low level journeymen, then suddenly thrown in with 28-0 world champion Aaron Pryor. The lack of tests on the way up meant that when things got tough, he was unable to overcome the difficulty even though he had the skill and power to give Pryor a tough time. The following year he was again given a journeyman opponent to knock out before being matched with a durable trial horse in Adriano Marrero, and again, due to the lack of hard fights on the way up, Johnson lost a split decision, unable to beat the 28-14 opponent that he was clearly more skilled than, but wasn't experienced enough to be able to get him under control. Johnson was given another low level, 3-7 journeyman to knock over before fighting 12-1 prospect Milton Guest. Johnson was stopped in 5 rounds effectively ending his career at a decent level. Johnson returned with two more wins in 1983 and 1984, his final win being a stoppage in Australia. Sadly, 3 months after his last bout, Johnson was shot dead during a robbery aged just 23.
