Gordon House was wounded twice in action and received the Purple Heart and other decorations earned at Saipan, Tarawa, etc. House was shipped to Hawaii for recuperative purposes. While stationed there he won the Marine lightweight championship, the Central Pacific Area junior lightweight title and the Pacific Coast Ocean Area Championship covering the U.S. Pacific forces, including Army, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard.

Gordon House was of Navajo/Oneida heritage. In April 1950, he was shot to death by the brother of his estranged wife. According to the police the shots were fired in self-defense and no charges were filed.
