On March 12, 1923, Powers/McCue fought an exhibition bout with Jimmy Smith at the Sound Social Club of Tacoma, Washington. After the bouts, in which no hard blows had been offered, he complained that his head hurt and collapsed. He died of a brain hemorrhage the following day. Reported to be 26-years-old when he died.
