This Benny Cohen was a lightweight and welterweight, and should not be confused with Benny Cohen the bantamweight from Egg Harbor New Jersey. The May 28th 1921 issue The News (Paterson NJ) has Cohen as the defending New Jersey Lightweight Champion before his June 4 1921 State Lightweight Title Fight against Willie Herman. Unclear at this point in time when Cohen won the lightweight title. Cohen started his boxing career as Frankie Wilson of Orange-January 16th, 1916 edition of the Newark Star-Eagle. Turned professional sometime in 1915. Before he turned pro Cohen won a New Jersey amateur title in 1915 at 133lbs. In the US Army 1918-1919 achieved the rank of Sargent before mustering out. Camp Dix Featherweight Champion 1918.
