Joe Simonich served in the 361st Infantry during World War I, according to the Feb. 3, 1922 Tacoma News Tribune. He became the welterweight champion of the 91st Division of Fort Lewis, WA. (The Dec. 27, 1920 TNT reported that he had started his boxing career at Camp Lewis with the 91st Division.) According to the January 31, 1924 Hoquiam American (Hoquiam, WA, USA), Rev. John W. Beard, former pastor of Hoquiam's First Presbyterian church, but now of Mount Tabor Presbyterian church in Portland, Oregon, was in the sports pages of the previous Sunday's Portland Oregonian newspaper, talking about his experiences working with the 361st Infantry of the 91st Division overseas. Rev. Beard started a Bible class while the outfit was in France. Pvt. Simonich took the class and learned the Bible extremely well. Meanwhile he fought three military engagements, throwing hand grenades at the Germans.
According to L. H. Gregory's column in the March 25, 1945 Portland Oregorian (Portland, OR, USA), Simonich had 347 career bouts. (It should be noted that, based on current research, this total is unrealistic.) According to the Feb. 22, 1922 Wenatchee Daily World (Wenatchee, WA, USA), he was in the Philippine Islands under the management of Eddie Tait. Gregory further reported that Simonich retired in 1929, with nary a scar, to his 640-acre cattle ranch 30 miles from Butte, Montana.
He had two sons: Joe, Jr., and Norman (who served in the US Navy during World War II).
He later worked as a referee in Montana.
