Joe Wilson
Joe Wilson was another of the many top flight Jewish Fighters to come out of London’s East End in the early part of the 20th Century. He was a long time contender for the British Flyweight Title, but received only one title shot against Sid Smith losing in 20 rds., though he floored Smith four times in the fight. Won the English Title at 8 Stone 2 lbs on February 5, 1912 When Wilson defeated Bill Kyne over 20 rds. Presented with a 8 stone 2. lbs Championship Belt by The Sporting Life after this victory. Certainly one of the more significant victories in his boxing career. Unclear at this time if he ever defended this title. Wilson served in the RAF during WWI and apparently didn’t fight between 1916 to 1919 because of his military service, except for three fights in 1918. And thanks to boxing historian Miles Templeton for providing information on Wilson's fighting record from 1918 and 1920.
