Dynamite Joe Moran graduated from Niagara Falls, New York, High School. He won the Intercollegiate middleweight title in 1932 and 1933 while attending Syracuse University.
According to May 2, 1933 Syracuse Journal, Moran was turning pro after 33 collegiate bouts in which he won 28 by KO, 4 by decision and one three round points loss to Eddie Flynn of New Orleans.
