Richard Hernandez was reportedly a brother of both Chief Baby Miller and Joe Cano, though there is some dispute about this. Hernandez suffered from poor eyesight. The June 16, 1939 Tampa Daily Tribune described him as follows "He will never be a champion because his eyesight makes him almost helpless against a fast, clever boxer. But there isn't a fighter in the lightweight division in Florida who can punch any harder than Hernandez with his right hand, or can take a punch any better."
