According to an article in the February 3, 1957 Fresno Bee by Billy Mahoney, Joe Reilly had come to Fresno in the spring of 1904 with some 70 career bouts, most of them in the Los Angeles area, where he had made his debut May 2, 1901. He made his Fresno debut April 24, 1904.

Reilly had been born the son of a blacksmith June 10, 1886 in San Rafael, California. He ran away from home twice: once in 1899, to New York, and another time to Los Angeles.

Mahoney reported that Reilly suffered from a drinking problem that eventually affected his boxing skills and his health. He married Ida Lavarone of Fresno in 1908 and they had a daughter. Reilly died at San Francisco, age 29, in 1915. As of 1957, his widow and daughter still lived in Fresno.
