Willard was the son of the former world heavyweight champion Jess Willard. He began boxing on the "Q.T." while attending Washington State College (now WSU) at Pullman, Washington in early 1937. He was primarily interested in football and track. Coach Ike Deeter helped him along. George Hubert was his sparring partner in college.
Willard's ring debut was Nov. 12, 1937, in an amateur bout. He decisioned Charles Wagner of the Potlatch Athletic Club at Potlatch, Idaho. The fight drew 600 people in a town of 1,200 at the time.
