Virgil was the brother of fellow boxers Toby Vigil and Roy Vigil. Virgil (Vigil) served in the United States Army, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, seeing duty in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, while obtaining the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart.

Vigil was known in his military career as Max Virgil, while he boxed under the last name of Vigil, which was his family's name. Vigil's Social Security Death record also lists the last name "Virgil". It is possible that this was a record keeping mistake with the military.
