Rufe Turner may have been the brother of fellow boxer Charles Turner of Stockton, CA. Rufe Turner's pro debut reportedly had been in Stockton. [1] Turner then fought in the Philippine Islands from 1914-21, but is to be distinguished from Filipino bantamweight Young Rufe Turner of 1917-18.
By early 1930 he had been committed to the Insular Psychopathic Hospital. In March 1937, he was placed aboard the Grant steamship to return to the San Francisco area, where it was expected he would be committed to the Napa Asylum.
Rufe Turner probably was a half-brother of fellow boxer, Charley Turner. Both appeared to have the same mother with Rufe (Rutherford Rogers) being born about 1877, the year in which Rutherford B. Hayes became President of the United States.
