Reported as being 18-years-old by Dec. 1943. (A photo of him can be found in the Dec. 14 Daily News Searchlight newspaper of Bremerton, WA, USA.) The April 11, 1945 DNS reported that he had joined the United States Army the summer before, and recently had been killed in action in Belgium (World War II).
In April 1945, the Portland, Oregon, promotional company, the National Boxing Club, was renamed the Mel Roberts Boxing Club, in honor of the fallen fighter, by then matchmaker Joe Waterman.
