Gary Jacobs was a highly-ranked welterweight contender for most of his career. He is of Scottish-Jewish heritage. Jacobs won the Scottish Welterweight Title in January of 1987 defeating Dave Douglas on points over l2 rds-first important title for Jacobs. He surprisingly won the British Commonwealth Welterweight Title in 1988 defeating Wil Gentzen on points over 12 rds. He successfully defended the Commonwealth Title four times and losing the title in 1989 to Donovan Boucher. He finally won the BBBofC British Welterweight Title in 1992 defeating Del Bryan on points over 12 rds. And then in February of 1993 Jacobs won the European (EBU) Welterweight Title by defeating Ludovic Proto by TKO in the 9th rd of a scheduled 12 rd fight. He held the European and presumably the UK Welterweight title until June of 1996 when he lost the European title by TKO in 7 to Patrick Carpentier. Prior to that Jacobs fought Hall of Fame World Welterweight Champion Pernell (Sweetpea) Whitaker in a World Title fight in 1995-losing in 12 rds., but fighting a very close and competitive fight again "Sweetpea."Jacobs retired in late 1997 after a very credible career in the ring.

He was inducted into the Scottish Boxing Hall of Fame in 2011. He was inducted into The International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2025.
