From a 1958 article in the Milwaukee Sentinel:

"I lost my mother when I was five and my father when I was seven," Art Swiden said. "I went to live with my grandparents, but I was restless. I was a big kid so I lied about my age (14) when I enlisted in the Marines. I was stationed at Parris Island and Philadelphia when the Marines caught up with me and booted me out. So, I bummed my way to St. Louis, where I had a brother in the Army. I lived in the YMCA there, and one day I wandered into the gym where a few Golden Gloves fighters were training. I joined them, found out it was pretty fun and before I knew it I was in the tournament. I went on to win the title as a 175 pounder, winning a match. I next won the Missouri State honors... so I decided to turn pro."

In March of 1948, Swiden was fined $100 and suspended by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission for repeated fouls leading to his disqualification against Jackie Cranford. [1]
