Rocco 'Rocky' Mattioli was born on 20 July 1953 in Ripa Teatina, Italy before immigrating with his family to Morwell in 1958. Rocky attended the Sacred Heart Primary School and then later Morwell Technical Secondary school.
Rocco started his amateur boxing career at the age of 13 under the guidance of trainer Stan Mounsey in an old shed adjacent to the Morwell RSL. At the age of 16 Rocco won the Victorian Amateur Championships Title and finished runner-up at the National Championships in 1969. At 17 Rocco turned professional on the popular television show 'TV Ringside'. Moving to Melbourne, he came under the guidance of Ambrose Palmer, enjoying several years of success before Mattioli left Palmer and teamed up with Oscar Minari.
In 1973 he won the Australian Welterweight Title from Jeff White, after years of various results Rocco stood tall. On 6 August 1977 in Berlin, Rocco Knocked-Out Eckhard Dagge and by doing so claimed the World Boxing Council (WBC) Light Middleweight Title. Over the next 2 years, Rocco successfully defended his title 2 times before losing to Maurice Hope by a Technical Knock-Out in his 3rd defense. He tried to regain the title in a rematch with Hope in July of 1980, but he was stopped in the 11th round.
Rocco Mattioli's professional career spanned 74 fights; 65 wins (52 KO's) 7 loses and 2 draws. He was inducted into the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame in October 2004.
