• The Feb. 23, 1910 Tacoma Daily News carried an article about Phillips's start in Wisconsin. He had once been matched with a young Ad Wolgast, but the bout fell through.
• While living in the Tacoma area, he worked as a longshoreman. TDN, Jan. 12, 1911. He also promoted boxing shows in Ruston (north Tacoma) circa 1910/11.
• The April 1, 1913 TDN reported that he was then working at the T.R. & J. Power Station and local firehouse.
