James was a sparring partner for Muhammad Ali in the early 1970s. James reportedly acted in between fights, and appeared in The All-American Boy as a fighter uncredited (as Chuck James). James also claimed to have appeared in the Fred Williamson boxing movie Hammer.
It is believed that James may have also fought under the name Charlie Jones, as there evidence that either name was used in the early portion of his career. James claimed only a dozen fights prior to his bout with Terry Hinke in Honolulu. James cited his sparring with Ali, and a difficulty landing bouts for his sparse record.
