Originally from Mississippi, Leroy Jones won two New York Golden Gloves Championships after moving to Brooklyn, New York; winning both the 1971 Heavyweight Sub-Novice Championship and the 1972 Heavyweight Open Championship. Jones defeated John Holloway in the finals to win the 1971 Sub-Novice Heavyweight title and stopped(RSC) Nathan Thompson in the second round to win the 1972 Heavyweight Open title. Jones trained at the Telstar Athletic Club in New York City.
