Haynes defeated William Bello to win the 1961 147lb Open title and in 1962 Haynes defeated Thomas Brennan to win the 147lb Open title. Haynes trained at the 134th Street Parks Department Gym in New York City.

In 1961 he won The New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions by decision vs. Joe Williams.
