According to a column with a headline, "HARRY BEGOURIE KILLED IN ACTION IN FRANCE," and authored by "Straight Left," in the September 20, 1916 edition of the Referee (Sydney, NSW) on the Trove website, word had been received during the week that Begourie had died of wounds on August 8, 1916. He had been one of the first Queensland-born boxers to volunteer to fight the Germans and had served in Egyptian and Gallipoli campaigns, sustaining wounds in the process, before being shipped to France. In a letter while in France, Begourie wrote that he was happy to be in such beautiful surroundings at the time after enduring the sand and rigors of Egypt and Gallipoli. Accompanying the column was a photograph of Begourie and his former school teacher, E. Kingsbury, that was taken while they were serving in France.
