In 1978, two years after claiming an Olympic silver, Simon disappeared from the Romanian boxing team while they were in Lake Tahoe, Nevada and sought asylum in the United States. Wanting to fight as a professional, Simon relocated to Laguna Beach, California where he was managed by Jackie McCoy.
