Mahmoud Fadel, Former Muhammad Ali Sparring Partner

  • Heavyweight Mahmoud Fadel was a sparring partner of Muhammad Ali in the 1970's, including at the famed 5th Street Gym in Miami, Florida. He claimed that, at one time, a ten round bout between Ali and Fadel was considered before Ali regained the World Heavyweight title, but that Ali ultimately decided against it because he and Fadel were friends. Fadel won seven consecutive bouts while working as an off again-on again sparring partner with Ali. After Muhammad Ali's retirement as champion in 1978, Fadel attempted a comeback in June 1979 in Monaco after a year of inactivity but instead got knocked out in the second round by French Heavyweight champion Lucien Rodriguez, a former European Heavyweight title holder, on the undercard to Leon Spinks versus Gerrie Coetzee. Fadel then retired from the ring for good. 37 years after his name had faded from the boxing scene, on Friday, June 10, 2016, Mahmoud Fadel reemerged in the funeral procession for Muhammad Ali in Louisville, Kentucky, attending the services and traveling in the funeral procession to Cave Hill Cemetery to say his final goodbye to his friend and boxing mentor.
