• Wells aka Charles Hubbard was shot by police Patrolman William F. Kuntz in the arm, back, and abdomen following a scuffle at 38th street just west of seventh avenue May 31, 1913. (June 1, 1913 New York Times).

• According to the NY Sun report Wells got into a fight over a girl. The girl's other suitor, one Diamond Charley Giacomo, and two others known to police as James Connolly and William McVitty, opened fire on Wells outside a chop-suey joint in Chinatown. Wells returned fire. Giacomo was found slumped over a railing by patrolman Kuntz, while Wells lay on the sidewalk with at least five slugs in him. Connolly was charged with shooting Wells.
