In November 1950 Hugh Sloan was selected as Cardston's outstanding male athlete since 1887. As an amateur boxer he had captured 8 Alberta championships as well as the Canadian 118-pound in 1940; outside of boxing, he had been a crack track and field performer. For serving with the R.C.A.F. during World War II he received the Distinguished Flying Cross.
