David Grayton III began boxing at age 10 and fought for a decade as an amateur before turning professional in the early 1980s. Known for possessing a good jab, Grayton scored the biggest win of his career in 1983 when he claimed an eight-round decision over previously unbeaten Darryl Tyson (5-0). An injury caused from being thumbed led Grayton to retire in 1986. He is the father of National Golden Gloves Champion David Grayton IV.
