His name was often spelled Koehler--the English way of writing the German name Kohler with an o umlaut. He seems to have come from the German population in Bosnia or Croatia.

Koehler fought all over Europe, twice in Norway. Norwegian manager John W. Wiksen had him against Oslo fighters Roy Askvold and Johnny Romsaas in 1965. Wiksen remembers Kohler as a very likeable guy, inside and outside the ring, although he had some rough tactics. Kohler was the ulitimate test for any young ambitious middleweight in Europe in the 1960s.

He was famed for his always dangerous knock out punch, although he admitted that his ambitions had waned somewhat after a painful KO loss to German veteran Peter Mueller early in his career.
