Alphonse Halimi was from Algeria, a French colony at the time of his boxing debut. Halimi is a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. He participated in the first ever professional boxing contest in Israel, fighting Piero Rollo in Tel Aviv in June 1962 and winning the EBU (European) Bantamweight Title. It was Halimi’s last important title that he won in his distinguished professional career. He won the World Bantamweight Title in 1957 when he defeated Mario D’ Agata over 15rds on April 1 1957. He solidified his claim has World Bantamweight Champion when he defeated Raul Macias over 15 rds by split decision. Macias had been the NBA Bantamweight World Champion. Halimi held the title for two years before being stopped by Jose Becerra in the 8th rd. in July of 1959. He failed to regain the title from Becerra in February 1960 in a rematch being stopped again in the 9th rd. But he re-won the Bantamweight World Crown in October of 1960 when Becerra relinquished the title defeating Freddie Gilroy over 15 rds. Held the title for around a year losing the Bantamweight World Title to Johnny Caldwell in 1961
