Ricardo Spain reportedly entered his fight with Mike Tyson with a record of 7-0. Four of these fights took place between November 1980 and September 1982 at Lucasville (Ohio) Prison where Spain was incarcerated for almost 5 years, decisioning Tom Walker in November 1980 and winning the other three by knockout. His bout with Steve Allred was the first since his release from prison.

In his fight with Mike Tyson he was introduced as Rick "The Ram" Spain. Ricardo Spain isn't his real name, it's Abdul Rahman and he was born around 1954. In July 2017 a 63-year-old Rahman was involved in a deadly confrontation outside an RTA bus on Cleveland's east side, where a man named Andrew Easely was shot and killed.
