He suffered his first defeat against Leon Spinks in November 1977, losing by a 10-round unanimous decision. The winner of Spinks-Righetti was promised a title shot against Muhammad Ali. Three months after defeating Righetti, Spinks beat Ali by a 15-round split decision to win the World Heavyweight Championship.
