Claimed to have been matched to fight Luis Angel Firpo in 1928. On way there, on Nov. 11, 1928, the ship he was on, the Vestris, rammed a coral reef, but Fay was one of the survivors. (Total on board were 129 passengers and 199 crew, about 110 perished.)
