Doran won the amateur championship of Victoria in July of 1910. In the Australasian championships at New Zealand in September Doran lost a four round decision to New Zealand's Alec Pooley but was informed by the referee that judges had overturned his own decision and given the win to Pooley.
In March of 1916, Doran was slated to box George "KO" Brown but re-injured his shoulder in training and was forced to back out.
