According to his obituary in the 1976-11-17 Connellsville Daily Courier, Billy Carter retired in 1931 after almost 40 professional fights, of which he lost less than 10 percent. His opponents included Eddie Dorsey, Johnny Donnelly, Fay Keiser, Terrell Duncan, Johnny Kirk, Eddie Carver, Tommy Phillips, Arthur Stigall, Bud Brown, Young Joe Gans, Frank Hunter, Young Nixon and Tommy Levin. The fight with Eddie Dorsey was reportedly an eliminator for a shot at Benny Leonard's lightweight title. Although Carter would go on to beat Dorsey twice, this time he lost the decision in 20 rounds.
