Cortez Stewart worked as a Senior Investigator for the New York County District Attorney's Office. He worked in that office for over twenty years and retired as a respected member of the staff of District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau.

In 1962 Stewart testified before a NY State legislative body investigating corruption and organized crime influence in the boxing industry. He reportedly was offered money by the infamous racketeer "Blinky" Palermo to spar with Sonny Liston.

Stewart was a high school basketball star at now-defunct William Penn High School in Harrisburg, PA
