Moses Lewis won the 1984 New York Golden Gloves 165lb Sub-Novice Championship. Lewis defeated Lyles Williams of the Don Bosco Boys Club in the finals to win the Championship. In 1985 Lewis advanced to the finals of the 165lb Open Championship and was defeated by Richard Wombley of the Suffolk County Police Athletic League. Lewis trained at the Empire Sporting Club in New York City.
