In 1916, Cripps, then a farmer, enlisted in the Australian military and was severely wounded in World War I. Cripps said upon departing for war, that seeing that so many of his friends had gone to the front and suffered in the cause of liberty, he felt that unless he went forward and gave them a hand he never could look them in the face again.

Cripps died in 1934 after a lengthy battle with cancer and was buried at the South Brisbane Cemetery. A memorial was unveiled at the cemetery on July 7, 1935, in his honor.
