Often referred to in news reports as C.A.C. Smith. An 1884 report in the Fall River Daily Herald stated he was 29 years old, born in Carlisle PA, lived in Cleveland for 6 years, then moved to East Saginaw< MI where he ws residing.

Smith moved north with his mother in 1865. He is reported to have began fighting at age 19 and to have had around 225 bouts. His manager, Bill Muldoon, called him a great fighter, a terrific hitter and a clever boxer.

During his career, Smith defeated such men as Frank Craig, Mervine Thompson, Tom McAlpine, Black Diamond (Harry Woodson), (Professor) Charles Hadley, Steve Taylor, Bill Gabig and Mike Brennan.

Smith was the first claimant to the World Colored Heavyweight Championship. Smith was also reported to have lost a comeback bout in 1906 to future Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson though how he lost is unknown.

Per May 23, 1897 Elmira Morning Telegram C. C. Smith, known as the Black Thunderbolt, was born in the south, about thirty-six years ago. He stands five feet eleven and three-quarters inches in height and when in condition weighs 170 pounds.In 1884-5-6, he met some of the best men then before the public. The Thunderbolt in 1896 made a tour of the country with the Harry. Burlesque company, giving exhibitions and meeting all comers. The trip was a successful one.

Y., in two rounds. He has fought draws with George Godfrey, Boston , six rounds; with Joe Choynski, in four rounds, no decision. He has defeated Joe Butler, of Philadelphia, in two rounds, in New York Athletic club; Mike Brennan in one round in the New York Athletic club; Bill Goble,- the mysterious boxer of New York, in two rounds; The Brooklyn StrongBoy, in one round; Mervin Thompson, in three rounds, in Cleveland; Mike Brennan,In New York Athletic club, in three rounds;.
